Luther, I dare say, like other men, had some respect for his own character, and some reverence for public opinion, and might have been willing to pay some deference to the learning and authority of the age, both of which lent their aid to the ancient system of Rome, but in a happy hour the Pope excommunicated the German troubler.

All is well for Luther now.

He must henceforth never conciliate or dream of peace.

Now his bonds are broken.

He burns the Pope’s bull and thunders out, ‘The Pope of Rome excommunicates Martin Luther, and I, Martin Luther, excommunicate the Pope of Rome.

The world hates me, and there is no love lost between us, for I esteem it as much as it esteems me. War to the knife,’ says he.

The man was never clear till the world thrust him out.

It is a splendid thing to run the gauntlet of so much contempt, that the soul is hardened to it under a strong consciousness that the right is none the more contemptible because its friend may be despised.

‘Why,’ you say, ‘is this how I am treated for the statement of truth? I was inclined to conciliate and yield, but after this never!

You have loosed my bonds.’

When man has done his worst, as Nebuchadnezzar did in this case, why then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego could say,

‘What more could he do? He has thrown us into a fiery furnace heated seven times hotter; he has done his worst and now what have we to fear?’ When persecution rages, it is wonderful what liberty it gives to the child of God.

Remember Luther, Knox, Calvin, Wycliffe, Bradford, Latimer, and many others! Under God these men owed their liberty of speech and liberty of conscience to the fact that the world thrust them out from all hope of its favour, and so loosed their bonds.

For meditation:

Consider the increasing boldness of one man while being cast out for Christ’s sake by the Pharisees (John 9:24–38).

One plus God is always a majority.

I am not under the law, and therefore I keep this day, not the seventh, but the first day of the week, on which my Saviour rose again from the dead—keep it not of law, but of grace—keep it not as a slavish bondage, not as a day on which I am chained and hampered with restraints against my will, but a day in which I may take holy pleasure in serving God, and in adoring before his throne.

The sabbath of the Jew is to him a task; the Lord’s Day of the Christian, the first day of the week, is to him a joy, a day of rest, of peace, and of thanksgiving; and if you Christian men can earnestly drive away all distractions, so that you can really rest today, it will be good for your bodies, good for your souls, good mentally, good spiritually, good temporally, and good eternally.

Let me give you a second reason.

You will find, if you are able to take a perfect rest, by driving away these evil thoughts when you are worshipping God, that you will do your work during the other days of the week far better …

If you have a bad Lord’s Day, you will have a bad week; but if you have a good day of rest, you will find it good with your souls the whole week long; not that you will be without trouble all the week; that would not be good for you; but you shall never be without grace during the week; nor if you have peace on the Sunday shall you be without peace on the Monday; the old Puritans used to say the first day of the week was the market-day; …

This is our market-day, and if we gain but little today, we shall have slender diet during the other days; but if we get the basket loaded well, if we have reason to say, ‘The Lord has satisfied my soul with fatness, and caused my spirit to delight in his word,’ you will find that during the week your peace shall be like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

For meditation:

The Lord’s Day is the one day in the week when Christians should feel free to do what they most want to do.

What does a spiritual person really want to do (Psalm 27:4; 84:2,10)? Do you, like Abraham, drive away the things that interfere with your worship of God? Jesus did (John 2:13–17).

No Condemnation

No Condemnation

"In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD,

the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for,

and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah,

and they shall not be found:

for I will pardon them whom I reserve"

(Jeremiah 50:20).

A glorious word indeed!

What a perfect pardon is here promised to the sinful nations of Israel and Judah!

Sin is to be so removed that it shall not be found,

so blotted out that there shall be none.

Glory be unto the God of pardons!

Satan seeks out sins wherewith to accuse us,

our enemies seek them that they may lay them to our charge,

and our own conscience seeks them even with a morbid eagerness.

But when the LORD applies the precious blood of Jesus,

we fear no form of search, for "there shall be none";

"they shall not be found."

The LORD hath caused the sins of His people to cease to be:

He hath finished transgression and made an end of sin.

The sacrifice of Jesus has cast our sins into the depths of the sea.

This makes us dance for joy.

The reason for the obliteration of sin lies in the fact that Jehovah Himself pardons His chosen ones.

His word of grace is not only royal but divine.

He speaks absolution, and we are absolved.

He applies the atonement, and from that hour His people are beyond all fear of condemnation.

Blessed be the name of the sin-annihilating God!
