An immovable foundation

‘If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?’

Psalm 11:3

There is something which the righteous man can do, if the foundations are removed, and that is, he can trust in God that it will be well in the end.

The worldling says, ‘It will be all the same a hundred years hence.’ The Christian says, ‘I do not want to look so far ahead as that; it is all right now.’ But the wind blows! ‘It is all right.’

But the waves dash! ‘It is all right.’

But all the sails are reefed! ‘It is all right!’

But the ship flies before the wind!

‘It is all right.’

But there are rocks ahead! ‘It is all right.’

Why? ‘Because he who is at the helm knows all about it; he created both wind and wave, and he knows how to cope with the storm.

I cannot see that it is right, but I know that it is, and I walk by faith, and not by sight.’ Christian, this is what you can do.

If the foundations be removed, you can bring faith into heavenly exercise, and you can sail against the wind.

The night may be dark and dreary but it will usher in the brighter morn, and merrily will the celestial music and songs greet his ears as the fresh dawning light triumphs over the fleeing darkness, and spreads itself till it bathes with its splendour all things which even in the darkness were working together for the good of God’s people.

Yes, the rough March winds and the dreary April showers were all fulfilling their task then, and now we can see it and rejoice in it as well as in their result.

We will sing in our dungeon with Paul and Silas, for all is well now as it will be hereafter in heaven. It is only in degree and realisation that earth’s joys differ from heaven’s to the true believer in Christ.

Even in his darkest hours the Christian is already an heir of a hidden treasure kept safe for him in heaven (Matthew 6:20; Ephesians 1:18; 1 Timothy 6:19; 1 Peter 1:4).

Servants Honored

Servants Honored

"Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof; so he that waiteth on his master shall be honored"

(Proverbs 27:18).

He who tends the fig tree has figs for his pains, and he who waits on a good master has honor as his reward. Truly the LORD Jesus is the very best of masters, and it is an honor to be allowed to do the least act for His sake.

To serve some lords is to watch over a crab tree and eat the crabs as one's wages; but to set ye the LORD Jesus is to keep a fig tree of the sweetest figs. His service is in itself delight, continuance in it is promotion, success in it is blessedness below, and the reward for it is glory above.

Our greatest honors will be gathered in that season when the figs will be ripe, even in the next world. Angels who are now our servitors will bear us home when our day's work is done.

Heaven, where Jesus is, will be our honorable mansion, eternal bliss our honorable portion, and the LORD Himself our honorable companion. Who can imagine the full meaning of this promise:

"He that waiteth on his master shall be honored"?

LORD, help me to wait upon my Master.

Let me leave all idea of honor to the hour when Thou Thyself shalt honor me.

May the Holy Spirit make me a lowly, patient worker and waiter!

Salvation of the Lord

“Salvation is of the Lord.”

Jonah 2:9

“Salvation is of the Lord,” in the application of it.

“No,” says the Arminian, “it is not; salvation is of the Lord, inasmuch as he does all for man that he can do; but there is something that man must do, which if he does not do, he must perish.”

That is the Arminian way of salvation.

I thought of this very theory of salvation when I stood by the side of that window of Carisbrooke Castle, out of which King Charles, of unhappy and unrighteous memory, attempted to escape.

I read in the guide book that everything was provided for his escape; his followers had means at the bottom of the wall to enable him to fly across the country, and on the coast they had their boats lying ready to take him to another land; in fact, everything was ready for his escape.

But here was the important circumstance; his friends had done all they could; he was to do the rest; but that doing the rest was just the point and brunt of the battle.

It was to get out of the window, out of which he was not able to escape by any means, so that all his friends did for him went for nothing, so far as he was concerned.

So with the sinner.

If God had provided every means of escape, and only required him to get out of his dungeon, he would have remained there to all eternity.

Why, is not the sinner by nature dead in sin?

And if God requires him to make himself alive, and then afterwards he will do the rest for him, then verily, my friends, we are not so much obliged to God as we had thought; for if he requires so much as that of us, and we can do it, we can do the rest without his assistance.

For meditation:

The converted are alive and can open the door to the Saviour (Revelation 3:20); but he had to open it himself the first time when they were still unbelieving and dead (Acts 16:14).
