"But who may abide the day of his coming?"

"But who may abide the day of his coming?"
—Malachi 3:2.

HIS first coming was without external pomp or show of power,
and yet in truth there were few who could abide its testing might.

Herod and all Jerusalem with him were stirred at the news of the wondrous birth.
Those who supposed themselves to be waiting for Him, showed the fallacy of their professions by rejecting Him when He came.

His life on earth was a winnowing fan, which tried the great heap of religious profession,
and few enough could abide the process.

But what will His second advent be?
What sinner can endure to think of it?

"He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth,
and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked."

When in His humiliation He did but say to the soldiers, "I am He," they fell backward; what will be the terror of His enemies when He shall more fully reveal Himself as the "I am?"

His death shook earth and darkened heaven, what shall be the dreadful splendour of that day
in which as the living Saviour, He shall summon the quick and dead before Him?

O that the terrors of the Lord would persuade men to forsake their sins and kiss the Son lest He be angry! Though a lamb, He is yet the lion of the tribe of Judah, rending the prey in pieces; and though He breaks not the bruised reed, yet will He break His enemies with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

None of His foes shall bear up before the tempest of His wrath, or hide themselves from the sweeping hail of His indignation; but His beloved bloodwashed people look for His appearing with joy, and hope to abide it without fear: to them He sits as a refiner even now, and when He has tried them they shall come forth as gold.

Let us search ourselves this morning and make our calling and election sure, so that the coming of the Lord may cause no dark forebodings in our mind.

O for grace to cast away all hypocrisy, and to be found of Him sincere and without rebuke in the day of His appearing.

Never Ashamed

Never Ashamed

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 10:32)

Gracious promise!
It is a great joy to me to confess my Lord.

Whatever my faults may be, I am not ashamed of Jesus,
nor do I fear to declare the doctrines of His cross.

O Lord, I have not hid Thy righteousness within my heart.
Sweet is the prospect which the text sets before me!

Friends forsake and enemies exult, but the Lord does not disown His servant.
Doubtless my Lord will own me even here and give me new tokens of His favorable regard.

But there comes a day when I must stand before the great Father.
What bliss to think that Jesus will confess me then!

He will say, "This man truly trusted Me and was willing to be reproached for My name's sake; and therefore I acknowledge him as Mine."

The other day a great man was made a knight, and the Queen handed him a jeweled garter; but what of that? It will be an honor beyond all honors for the Lord Jesus to confess us in the presence of the divine Majesty in the heavens.

Never let me be ashamed to own my Lord.
Never let me indulge a cowardly silence or allow a fainthearted compromise.

Shall I blush to own Him who promises to own me?

1 John 1:9 . If we confess our sins

1 John 1:9 .

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.......

Thoughts on This Verse...

Confessing our sins means that we view our sin the same way that God does -- the same revulsion and disdain for them.

This kind of confession opens our hearts to the flood of heaven's grace (see Psalm 51).

God shares with us the sweet liberation from sin that Jesus purchased at Calvary; and our sins are not only forgiven, but we are purified.

We are no longer sinners and the stain of that sin is removed as well.

We are clean, perfect, and without spot because of God's purifying grace (Col. 1:21-22).

Now let's live in a way that is reflective of this incredible gift!

PREACHING SET ON FIRE !!!

PREACHING SET ON FIRE !!!

The Holy Spirit is divine, and consequently he knows how to influence all kinds of men, and he can by the instrumentalities now in use reach just as many as he pleases.

I recollect well when I first preached in London a remark made by a friend, which very greatly encouraged me at the time, and has proved true in my experience.

When he heard that my little country chapel had been filled by the inhabitants of the village in which I had preached, he gave me hope of filling a far larger place in London: “For,” said he, “what will draw two hundred will draw two thousand, and what was useful to a few may be made just as useful to a multitude.”

I saw at once that it was so.

When we are dealing with spiritual forces we have not to calculate by pounds and ounces, or by so many horse power.

We have not to think of quantity.

As an illustration: give me fire, I will not bargain for a furnace, give me but a single candle, and a city or a forest may soon be in a blaze.

A spark is quite sufficient to begin with, for fire multiplies itself: So give us the truth, a single voice, and the Holy Spirit with it, and none can say where the sacred conflagration will end.

One Jonah sufficed to subdue all Nineveh by one monotonous sentence oft repeated, and despite the weakness of our present instrumentality, if God does but bless the gospel, there is no reason why it should not speedily be felt by the whole of London.

Mark of Covenant Grace !!!

Mark of Covenant Grace

And the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul that thou mayest live. (Deuteronomy 30:6)

Here we read of the true circumcision.
Note the author of it: "The Lord thy God."

He alone can deal effectually with our heart and take away its carnality and pollution.

To make us love God with all our heart and soul is a miracle of grace
which only the Holy Ghost can work.

We must look to the Lord alone for this and never be satisfied with anything short of it.

Note where this circumcision is wrought.
It is not of the flesh but of the Spirit.

It is the essential mark of the covenant of grace.
Love to God is the indelible token of the chosen seed; by this secret seal
the election of grace is certified to the believer.

We must see to it that we trust in no outward ritual but are sealed in heart by
the operation of the Holy Ghost.

Note what the result is-"that thou mayest live."
To be carnally minded is death.

In the overcoming of the flesh, we find life and peace.
If we mind the things of the Spirit, we shall live.

Oh, that Jehovah, our God, may complete His gracious work upon our inner natures,
that in the fullest and highest sense we may live unto the Lord.

The business of the preacher !!!

The business of the preacher

Let every unconverted person recollect that God knows what his excuse is for turning a deaf ear to the voice of a dying Savior’s love.

 You may not have spoken it to yourself so as to put it into words;
you might not even dare to do so,
lest your conscience should be too much startled:
but God knows it all.

He sees the hollowness, the folly, and the wickedness of your excuses.
He is not deceived by your vain words,
but makes short work with your apologies for delay.

Remember the parables of our Lord,
and note that when the man of one talent professed to think his master a hard man,
he took him at his word, and out of his own mouth condemned him;
and in the case of the invited guests who pleaded their farms and their merchandise as excuses, no weight was attached to what they said, but the sentence went forth,
“None of these men that are bidden shall taste of my supper.”

God knows the frivolity of your plea for delay, he knows that you yourself are doubtful about it, and dare not stand to it so as to give it anything like a solemn consideration.

Very hard do you try to deceive yourself into an easy state of conscience concerning it, but in your inmost soul you are ashamed of your own falsehoods.

My business at this time is, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to deal with your consciences, and to convince you yet more thoroughly that delay is unjustifiable, for the gospel has present demands upon you, and you must not say, “The vision that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.

Free to Travel

Free to Travel ¡¡

And I will strengthen them in the Lord: and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the Lord. (Zechariah 10:12)

A solace for sick saints.
They have grown faint, and they fear that they shall never rise from the bed of doubt and fear; but the Great Physician can both remove the disease and take away the weakness which has come of it.

He will strengthen the feeble.
This He will do in the best possible way, for it shall be "in Jehovah. "

Our strength is far better in God than in self.
In the Lord it causes fellowship, in ourselves it would create pride. In ourselves it would be sadly limited, but in God it knows no bound.

When strength is given, the believer uses it.
He walks up and down in the name of the Lord.

What an enjoyment it is to walk abroad after illness, and what a delight to be strong in the Lord after a season of prostration!

The Lord gives His people liberty to walk up and down and an inward leisure to exercise that liberty.
He makes gentlemen of us: we are not slaves who know no rest and see no sights, but we are free to travel at our ease throughout Immanuel's land.

Come, my heart, be thou no more sick and sorry;
Jesus bids thee be strong and walk with God in holy contemplation.

 Obey His word of love.
